Media Coalition on Right to Information has sensitized media personnel in Kumasi on the importance of the Right To Information(RTI) bill and the need to pass it into law.
Member of the Steering Committee of the Coalition; Mr. Clement Akoloh insisted that in a participatory democracy like that of Ghana, there is the need for every Ghanaian to have access to information in order to participate in government proceedings. He says it will help Ghanaians put parliamentarians on their toes and make them more accountable to the people who brought them to power.
Efforts to pass this bill began in 2010. Despite several controversies and activism to get the bill passed into law, it is yet to be passed.
Parliament assured Ghanaians a few days ago that the RTI bill will be passed into law when the House resumes sitting in February.
Mr. Akoloh sought to erase the misconception that the RTI Bill is for journalists. He insists it is a law for Ghanaians that will help engender transparency in various dealings as far as government and public offices are concerned.
He spoke to www.ghanagong.com reporter Joana Somiah on the sidelines of the RTI workshop held at Joyflux hotel in Kumasi.
