Grace Commey; GNDR Focal Point-Ghana

The Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR) has supported International cooperations with the aim of protecting vulnerable people in disaster-prone settings as a major way to reduce risk and promote safety.

The suggestion was made on the occasion of this year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction held on Tuesday on the theme “Only together can we save the planet”.

This year’s celebration focused on substantially enhancing international cooperation to developing countries through adequate and sustainable support to complement their national actions for implementation of the present Sendai Framework by 2030”.

A press statement signed by the National Focal Point for GNDR in Ghana; Grace Commey stressed the need to include women, children, the elderly, migrants, the indigenous people and people with disabilities and ensure that they are not left behind in efforts to reduce disaster risks.

She explained that Ghana, over the years has been experiencing a number of disasters which mostly include Floods.

“Reducing mortality, reducing the number of people injured, displaced and left without
livelihoods have never been left more challenging given the scale of the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing climate emergency.

She stressed that “Planetary emergencies can only be adequately addressed through impartial and inclusive international cooperation on disaster risk management.”

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction happens just weeks before COP 26,a climate change conference that must deliver increased levels of ambition and international cooperation on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and climate change adaptation.
