Many in Kumasi are jubilant over the move to open the re-developed Kejetia market to traffic following completion of the re-development project.
The market had been cordoned off for about 4 years now to allow for construction work on the Kejetia re-development project.
The project according to www.ghanagong.com’s findings have been ready to be opened but remained closed due to the determination of traders to trade on the pavements and road shoulders around the facility. The shops within the market are also yet to be allocated to traders.
Public Relations Officer at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly; Godwin Okumah Nyame advised the traders to relocate to any of the 34 satellite markets within Kumasi. He insists that most of the traders complaining about space to trade actually have space at race course and other markets. He advised them to stop entertaining the idea of displaying their wares along and on the roads, triggering traffic congestions at the central business district of Kumasi.
Heavy security presence was visible at Kejetia from very early in the day.
Mr. Nyame hinted that the security forces will be there for as long as it takes to ensure compliance.
The first phase of the Kejetia re-development project, which involved the reconstruction of the Kejetia Market, began in 2015. The second and third phases entail the renovation of the Central Market, which is to be done in two parts.
