Auditor General; Daniel Domelevo

The Auditor-General Mr. Daniel Yaw Domelevo says he feels surprised and upset about delays in prosecuting individuals and organizations who were surcharged for engaging in some financial infractions.

“It is very disheartening that none of these culprits engaged in this act have been prosecuted and are still at post and walking free at the expense of the ordinary taxpayer”, he said.

The Auditor General’s office managed to recoup GH¢ 67.32 Million state funds that were in possession of some individuals and organizations in 2018.

Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast, Mr. Domelevo recounted that, his office is doing everything possible to retrieve from all the 112 surcharge certificates issued by the GAS.

“Why would the state be hurried to jail a cassava thief but refuses to do same to nation wreckers and looters who have caused a great disservice to the state” he quizzed.

‘’Let me tell you, I was in New York last month to attend the  United Nations Panel of Auditors Conference, and during the self-introduction, I was saluted by Auditor Generals from USA, Canada, UK   for doing a great job for Ghana  by disallowing 4.5 billion old cedis and I was asked how many people  have been in jail now, and said zero and they said what? The country must be joking” he said.

He is, however, pleading with the Attorney General’s Department to fast-track the  prosecution of those involved immediately.

At times I feel frustrated when performing my duty as Auditor General, because, after going through all these challenges to retrieve the said money for the state, nothing has been done about it.

The chief directors at the various ministries are milking the state and we are sitting aloof watching them, and we run to other countries to source for funds and loans to develop the country whilst the money is being squandered here by our chief directors at the various ministries.

The Auditor General enjoins all and sundry to rise up and demand immediate prosecution of officials surcharged.
