Ghana news–Some child porters in Kumasi have pointed at a lack of shelter as the major danger they face.

The children, popularly referred to as kayayei, are therefore appealing to the government and philanthropists to come to their aid and provide them shelter.

These juvenile porters are between the ages of 10 and 14.

Those of them who spoke to ghanagong.com explain that they chose to be head porters because their parents are poor and could not afford to see them through school. Some say they had to travel long distances from the three northern regions to work in support of their families back home.

They also indicate a willingness to learn various trades including tailoring, carpentry, plumbing etc should the opportunity be provided.

The children say they are exposed to all sorts of dangers at their slum dwellings.
