Diabetes News-Two new Diabetes support Centres have been launched at Berekum and Kumasi to help make life easier for people living with the condition.
The Berekum Center is at the Holy Family Hospital while the Kumasi one is at the Suntreso Government Hospital.
The Centers were born out of a collaboration between Novo Nordisk, the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, the Danish Embassy as well as the National Catholic Health Service.
At a programme to launch the Centers, Ashanti Regional Director of Health Mr Emmanuel Tenkorang hoped the centre improves quality of diabetes care and reduce high morbidity and mortality associated with Diabetes. He cited lifestyle factors including nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, alcohol use amongst others as the causes of the dreaded condition. He also stated that kidney failure, blindness and stroke are among complications caused by Diabetes.
Mr. Tenkorang charged staff of the facility to be professional in their dealings with clients and ensure a strong culture of maintenance to help the facility last the test of time.
He encouraged those living with the disease that with good quality care, a diabetes patient can live out his full lifespan without complications, citing himself and few relatives to buttress his point.
Otumfour’s Manwerehene Nana Baffour Dr. Osei Hyeamann Brantwo VI was hopeful the facility will help reduce Diabetes incidents in the region.
Member of Parliament for the area; Hon. Daniel Okyem Aboagye also mentioned that government has amazing plans for the Suntreso Hospital and added that he would soon meet with Authorities of the hospital to update them on new developments.
The International Diabetes Federation has revealed that 518,400 Ghanaians were living with Diabetes in 2017.
