Ghana Health News–The Minister of Health, Mr Kwaku Agyemang Manu has pledged government’s support to the Kumasi City Cancer project.
This, he noted is to ensure the city becomes the hub for the diagnosis, treatment and care-center for all cancer related diseases and challenges.
Addressing participants and stakeholders at the opening ceremony and inaugural meeting of the Cancer City Project in Kumasi, the Minister stressed the importance of ensuring the project succeeds.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, he noted believes in the wellbeing of the citizenry and had committed itself by virtue of its manifesto promise to ensuring that diseases such as cancer and others are given the needed attention so as to be able to deal with them.
‘’We are committed as a government and Ministry to put into practice the experience and best measures other countries such as Colombia, Paraguay and Myanmar which has cancer city centers to ensuring that Kumasi makes Ghana and Africa proud by executing a good project’’, the Minister stated.
MAYOR:
On his part, Osei Assibey-Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Kumasi promised to ensure adequate resources and support is given to executives of the Cancer City board to ensure they execute an excellent project.
According to him, it is crucial to attach all seriousness to dealing with cancers in all its forms due to the devastating effects the disease has on humans.
It is scary, the Mayor noted with extreme passion to realize that cancer kills about 7million people across the world.
This, he intimated calls for the support of all in the country to ensure they collectively devote resource and energies to making the Kumasi Cancer City project a success.
‘’It is incumbent on us as a people who have been given this challenge to ensure we execute this project so that we become a good example to the world on how to deal with cancer’’, the Mayor intimated.
DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS:
Speaking to the Ghanaian Observer Newspaper on the sidelines of the meeting, Melissa Rendler-Garcia, Director, Regional Operations of City Cancer Project expressed satisfaction about the commitment of the Ghanaian officials in the execution of the project.
She said the Kumasi Cancer City Board and Management has shown desire to ensure the project is executed to provide the care the center seeks to give.
This, she noted is the surest way of giving hope for a successful project execution since people who are the ultimate beneficiaries are to show desire for a such an initiative.
Miss Melissa pledged the commitment of the World Cancer team to ensuring they partner with the Kumasi team for the execution of a great project in Kumasi.
OTHERS:
Chairing the event earlier, Baffuor Owusu Amankwatia VI, Bantamehene on behalf of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II pledged the support of the Asante people to the cancer project.
The success of the project, he stressed will ultimately benefit the people since treatment and care will be available to all who may or are suffering from cancers.
The Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah promised to support the Kumasi Cancer City Project executives with any other logistics they may need in addition to the office facility he has provided to ensure their work is done unhindered.
