
Hon. James Gunu is a seasoned Ghanaian politician, development communicator, and governance practitioner who currently serves as the Volta Regional Minister. Born on September 21, 1972, in Akatsi in the Volta Region, he hails from Atiavi and brings to office extensive experience in grassroots governance, public administration, and strategic leadership.
Education
He holds academic qualifications in Communication Studies and Development Communication from the Ghana Institute of Journalism, as well as a Master’s Degree in Local Government Administration from the Institute of Local Government Studies, which have equipped him with strong competencies in public communication, decentralised governance, and development planning.
Political Experience
Hon. Gunu previously served as the District Chief Executive for the Akatsi North District from 2013 to 2017, where he provided leadership in local governance, development coordination, and security as Chairman of the District Security Council. He later served as the Volta Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress from 2018 until his appointment as Regional Minister, during which time he played a key role in strengthening party structures, deepening grassroots engagement, and supporting democratic governance across the region.
As Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu is pursuing a clear and focused development agenda for the region, which he is committed to advancing vigorously in 2026 with creativity, innovation, and resilience. Central to this agenda is the promotion of peace and stability as the foundation for positioning the Volta Region as one of the most attractive investment destinations in Ghana and beyond. He is also focused on building the institutional and operational capacity of ministries, departments, agencies, and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to effectively deliver on their core mandates, particularly in the areas of local economic development and job creation. In addition, he is strengthening collaboration with MMDCES, ministries, state institutions, development partners, and the private sector to ensure the successful realisation of the development vision of H.E. President John Dramani Mahama for the Volta Region, in alignment with national priorities.

Beyond public service, he has a strong passion for community development, youth empowerment, sports development, cultural heritage, and public communication, values that continue to shape his people-centred and inclusive approach to leadership.
Hon Gunu is also an elder in the church of Pentecost.
